Long grey coat with cropped wide trousers
Why it works
A long open grey coat, a longer charcoal tee and cropped wide black trousers create several deliberately different hem levels. Black boots connect the shorter trouser opening to the ground, while the open coat makes the vertical layer order visible. This avant-garde direction is expressive without needing an exaggerated color palette. The cropped trouser lets the boot shaft become part of the silhouette rather than something hidden under denim. Keep the inner tee plain so its long line remains a structural element. The contrast between coat length and trouser length should look considered from the side as well as the front, not only in a carefully arranged standing pose.

The proportions
Get the fit right.
Choose a coat that hangs freely when open and does not catch on the longer tee beneath it. The tee can extend below the usual waistband line, but leave some visible trouser shape rather than covering almost the entire upper leg. Cropped wide trousers should end at a point that works with the boot shaft, without forcing a bare gap you do not want. Check sitting and walking, since the hem rises with movement. A relatively broad boot gives the wide opening something to relate to while keeping the lower line continuous.
Your wardrobe, your version
Make it yours.
- Use a shorter charcoal tee when you want the trouser rise to be more visible. Retain the long coat so the outer-to-inner length contrast remains clear.
- Try charcoal cropped trousers for a softer tonal shift against the coat. The black boots can remain the darkest endpoint in the composition.
- Replace the long coat with an open knee-length layer for a less dramatic version. Keep the cropped wide leg and boot relationship as the central experiment.
