Forest knit vest with a white Oxford
Why it works
The vest creates a bounded block of green, while the white shirt draws a bright outline at the neck and arms. That clear geometry is the main reason the wide black trousers work: the upper half remains compact instead of adding another oversized garment. Black derbies extend the dark leg line and leave the collar as the brightest point. The academic reference is recognizable without a tie, oversized scarf or decorative book bag. This is also distinct from a cardigan outfit because the sleeves stay white and the center stays closed. Reuse the Oxford with the cardigan from P03 for a softer outline. The vest can bring the same piece into a sharper, more graphic arrangement without replacing the whole wardrobe.

The proportions
Get the fit right.
The vest shoulder should sit over the shirt shoulder without drooping far down the upper arm. Armholes need enough space for the shirt, but large gaps can make the layering look unfinished. Keep the shirt tucked or leave only a narrow hem beneath the vest. Wide trousers should start cleanly at the waist and fall without pulling across the seat. Check their length with the derbies on: a light break should leave the toe visible. Avoid rolling a thick cuff that competes with the short upper panel.
Your wardrobe, your version
Make it yours.
- Choose a cream Oxford and brown derbies to warm the green-and-black base without changing its short-over-wide proportions.
- Replace the trousers with dark straight jeans for a more ordinary daily outfit that still uses the vest as the focal piece.
- Reuse the white Oxford with a charcoal cardigan and grey trousers when you want a softer, less graphic transition between layers.
