Brown bomber with charcoal pleated trousers

Why it works

The bomber and pleated trousers create the useful tension in this outfit. A rounded, short jacket gives the upper half a casual shape, while the pleats make the lower half read as deliberate tailoring. Grey provides a calm middle tone between brown and charcoal. Black loafers keep the bottom understated and leave the bomber as the main surface of interest. Unlike C01, the trousers carry no denim texture, so the shape at the waist becomes more important. Reuse the charcoal trousers with the long navy coat from P02 when you want a larger outer silhouette. Keep the knit fine enough to sit smoothly under the bomber; adding a thick sweatshirt can change the intended compact outline considerably.

The proportions

Get the fit right.

The bomber hem should sit near the waistband rather than covering most of the pleats. Check the jacket zipped as well as open, making sure the ribbing does not ride upward over the knit. Tuck or shorten a knit that hangs far beneath the bomber. Pleats should stay mostly closed while standing, with room at the seat when sitting. Let the trouser hem brush the loafer upper without a deep stack. A wide leg still needs a clear endpoint, so check that the black toe remains visible from above.

Your wardrobe, your version

Make it yours.

  • Use an ecru knit and brown Chelsea boots for a warmer arrangement around the same charcoal trouser base.
  • Replace the bomber with a navy soft blazer to reuse the grey knit and pleats in a more tailored silhouette.
  • Wear the brown bomber over a plain grey tee with black straight jeans when you want to remove the tailored folds entirely.
