Long black cardigan with straight denim
Why it works
A long textured cardigan introduces a softer goth silhouette than a structured coat. The open front creates two dark vertical edges around a plain black tee, while straight black denim gives the knit a firmer base. Boots repeat that stability at ground level. The combination works because the surfaces differ: knit catches the light in small irregular areas, the tee provides a flatter center and denim gives the legs a clearer outline. Adding several more distressed pieces would obscure that contrast. Start with the cardigan as the main texture and keep the tee simple, then decide whether the outfit needs any additional accessory at all.

The proportions
Get the fit right.
Check the cardigan with your arms relaxed rather than pulling its fronts together. It should hang freely, with sleeves that do not stack heavily over the hands. A tee finishing near the upper hip keeps a visible division inside the long outer layer. Straight jeans need enough room at the knee for a natural fall, but they do not have to be extremely wide. Let the boot shaft sit comfortably inside the hem. If the cardigan is very long, a slightly cleaner jean break prevents every edge from collecting at the floor.
Your wardrobe, your version
Make it yours.
- Use washed charcoal jeans for a small tonal difference beneath the knit. This makes the cardigan edge easier to see without adding a strong color.
- Swap the tee for a fine black long-sleeve top when you want a more covered base. Avoid a bulky sleeve that stretches the cardigan shape.
- Try low black shoes with a shorter denim hem for a lighter endpoint. Keep the long cardigan so you can compare footwear rather than changing every proportion.
