Textured black cardigan with loose black denim
Why it works
The cardigan introduces irregular texture, so the jeans can remain plain and consistently black. The tee has only a subtle washed surface: it should still read as black rather than a broad grey panel. Those differences give the open layers separation without changing the palette. Black boots anchor the loose leg and echo the cardigan’s darker edges. This is a shorter, softer alternative to G09’s long coat, and it is more texture-led than S06’s simple tee layering. Reuse the black jeans and boots beneath that long coat when the occasion calls for a larger outline. Keep distressing concentrated in the cardigan instead of adding several heavily torn pieces; one textured area explains the grunge reference more clearly.

The proportions
Get the fit right.
Choose a cardigan that hangs open without the shoulder falling so far that the sleeves cover your hands. Its hem should end around the hip, leaving enough jean visible to establish the loose leg. Keep the tee within the cardigan hem rather than creating another long panel. Check that irregular knit edges do not catch on a belt or trouser hardware. The jeans should pass smoothly over the boot shaft and make a controlled break. Check the wash in ordinary daylight so the whole outfit still reads as black.
Your wardrobe, your version
Make it yours.
- Use a plain black tee and ribbed black cardigan for a tidier texture pattern that remains entirely monochrome.
- Replace the loose jeans with black carpenter pants to move the lower detail toward seams and pockets while keeping the same dark palette.
- Reuse the black jeans and boots with a long black coat and black knit for a larger, more continuous silhouette.
